Prosthodontics is the specialty of dentistry devoted to replacing missing teeth or repairing and restoring natural teeth.

Why would I need to see a prosthodontist?

You may be referred to a Prosthodontist if you need treatment for any of the following dental situations:

  • An interest in improving your dental appearance and smile (cosmetic dental care)
  • Replacement of missing or unrestorable teeth
  • Rehabilitation/alteration of your occlusion (bite)
  • Restoration of teeth and surrounding tissues damaged by decay, trauma, erosion or general wear and tear
  • Treatment of orofacial pain or sleep apnoea
  • Management and coordination of complex treatment plans
  • Dental treatment associated with oral cancer

The treatment provided by prosthodontists may include the provision of restorations (fillings), dentures (full or partial dentures), fixed crowns or bridges, veneers and/or implants.

Prosthodontists often coordinate a team involving other specialist practitioners as required.

The cost of Prosthodontic treatment is determined by the each patient’s individual requirements. Following comprehensive diagnosis and discussion, and prior to commencement of treatment, patients will receive a detailed treatment plan and estimate of fees.

Crowns, Bridges & Veneers

Dental Members Springwood offer patients the opportunity to restore their smile and enhance functionality with custom-made dental crowns.

Dental crowns are a custom-made restoration which fits over the prepared existing natural tooth and replaces the natural crown, which is the part of the tooth that is visible above the gums. Dental crowns can be used for strength, durability and tooth stability, or for cosmetic reasons to enhance the appearance of a tooth.

Dental crowns are often required when a tooth has been severely weakened and is no longer structurally sound. This can be as a result of trauma, tooth decay, previous root canal therapy or even general wear over time. This cosmetic dental treatment can also be used to brighten and improve the appearance of one’s smile by covering broken, chipped, stained or discoloured teeth or by modifying the shape of a tooth. Dental crowns are custom-made for each individual patient and can be matched to existing teeth making them a favourable cosmetic dental treatment option.

What’s involved in creating Dental Crowns?

Constructing a dental crown generally requires two appointments with your dentist. During the first appointment the existing tooth is prepared to receive dental crown, impressions are taken and a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth. At the next visit, the temporary crown is removed and replaced by the new custom-made dental crown. The new crown is adjusted and cemented into place, providing a more long term natural looking aesthetic solution. Dental crowns can be constructed from a range of materials. Your dentist will discuss which material will be most appropriate for your individual situation.

The cost of dental crowns does vary depending on the type of crown required. Your dentist will be able to provide you with a fee estimate prior to completing any treatment.
